When people are discussing weddings, they talk about the day as being the happiest in the bride's life. The bridegroom hardly gets a look-in. 'All you have to do,' he is told, 'is turn up on time.'

Such advice disregards a number of other things the groom must do, and places him in a secondary role which does not fit the reality of many weddings today. Just as marriage is a partnership, so is arranging the wedding, and the days when all the arrangements (and the bills) were left to the bride's family are over. Many couples live together (or virtually do so) before they are married, and many also make a considerable financial contribution to the wedding. As these trends have developed, so the role of the bridegroom has changed. Men today can choose to be totally involved in every aspect of the wedding. This helps to make the big day itself a celebration of the partnership of marriage, instead of just a great send-off for the bride.
Engaged couples today face a large number of choices about where to marry (church or registry officer), what kind of reception to have (grand sit-down meal, informal buffet, at an hotel, in a marquee?) and whether

to have an evening party too (disco for friends and those you were unable to invite to the service, a quiet dinner with your relations) or a meal with your new spouse to commence your honeymoon. Choosing requires making a decision on the kind of wedding you want, and much sifting of information of the options available.

There are plenty of books giving advice on how to be the best man, but very few for the bridegroom. Yet the wedding would always be able to go ahead in the absence of the best man, but it would come to a halt pretty fast if the husband-to-be were off the scene! Indeed, in many ways the balance of responsibility and involvement has shifted from the best man to the bridegroom over the last few years: few best men carry out all the tasks traditionally allocated to them, and many of these duties are taken over by the bridegroom.

Weddings have retained their significance as one of the major rituals in our lives. One of the myths which have been maintained about them is that the day is all about the bride. It isn't. In fact, although the happy couple are the centre of attention, the day is not really about them at all. Weddings give their families and friends the opportunity to celebrate a new partnership, and to have a wonderful time.

As bridegrooms become more involved in organizing the wedding, they must come to terms with this simple fact: the people with the greatest expectations of the wedding are parents, relations and friends. For the happy couple, the wedding day is very hard work, and can be a real strain at times and the source of many hours' worry beforehand. As always the secret of overcoming this anxiety is good planning – and knowing what is expected of you. That is what this book is all about.
