Or from close contact with rashes on their skin
Diagnosis is made on the pseudomembrane appearance
It can also be confirmed by throat sample for diphtheria presence

Most people with Diphtheria will recover from their illness.
Diphtheria patients need antitoxin and antibiotics for their sickness
Bed rest, oral fluid and respiratory care will help recovery
Recovery is usual within 14-21 days with no damage to the body

1. Take a well Balanced Diet

2. Treatment of Diphtheria
a. An infected person needs to be isolated in hospital and treated with both diphtheria antitoxin and antibiotics immediately.
b. Diphtheria antitoxin is given as an intramuscular injection to neutralize the circulating toxin in the body and to prevent the disease from worsening.
c. The infection is then treated with appropriate antibiotics.
Erythromycin or Penicillin are used in the treatment of Diphtheria.
d. Intravenous fluids given for dehydration
e. Tracheotomy if breathing obstruction is bad
f. Some patients with difficulty in breathing due to a block in the airway may need to be ventilated.
g. Oxygen therapy
h. Cardiac failure should be treated

Besides antibiotics the following will help:
a. Steam inhalation
b. Cough mixtures
c. Avoid smokes, dust, dry air and sudden temperature change
d. Anyone in close contact with the infected person should have their throat cultures tested.
e. They should also receive antibiotics immediately to prevent its transmission to others in addition to making sure that they have been adequately immunized.

3. Keep bones and body strong

Eat foods rich in calcium like yogurt, cheese, milk, and dark green vegetables.

Eat foods rich in Vitamin D, like eggs, fatty fish, cereal, and fortified milk.

Eat food rich in Vitamins B and C such as green vegetables and fruits

Zinc and other minerals are important to the body

4. Get enough rest and Sleep

Avoid stress and tension

5. Exercise and stay active.

It is best to do weight-bearing exercise such as walking, jogging, stair climbing, dancing, or lifting weights for 2½ hours a week.

One way to do this is to be active 30 minutes a day at least 5 days a week.

Begin slowly especially if a person has not been active.

6. Do not drink more than 2 alcohol drinks a day for a man or 1 alcohol drink a day for a woman.

Alcohol use also increases the chance of falling and breaking a bone.

Alcohol can affect the neurons and brain cells.

7. Stop or do not begin smoking.

It also interferes with blood supply and healing.

My mother who had worked in a hospital before said that the children with diphtheria in the hospital were miserable and had difficulty swallowing and talking
