VD: As a Kashmiri, born in the valley, and with having spent a substantial part of my adolescence there, I am attempting this story in many parts, trying to outline the story of Kashmir from 1947 till the present times. As we all know, history is a very elusive art, and tends to camouflage itself, chameleon-like, in the colours of the glasses that the writer is wearing at the time. To be able to write objectively about a subject requires not only detachment in time but also in distance. Both are absent in this case. In fact, it is an intensely personal memoir, heavily dependent upon my impressions as I grew from childhood to adolescence in the valley. I am not a writer of the caliber of Ramchandra Guha, whose "India After Gandhi" is a seminal work of research and admirably rises above the two pitfalls. I request the reader's indulgence, and that is the reason why this booklet will remain "My Story of Kashmir" and not its history.

AQ: Jammu & Kashmir state, as we all know, which had a transient existence as the nation has witnessed so much of chaos since the independence of India. Each war cut the fragments off the original territory and the state became a soccer ball being footed by the trio-India, Pakistan & the republic of China. The adorable scenery, roaring streams, beautiful landscapes and huge mountains which attract thousands of tourists from every corner of the earth houses people, the stressed humans. The situation is so pathetic that a common man fears to speak anything about Kashmir dispute. You are safe until you are silent; better not to opine in such a sensitive case. When you open-up, you endanger your life for sure. You may ask why?? Well. If your opinion is pro-freedom, you are likely to be booked under Public Safety Act (PSA). You may be gunned-down if you endorse India. So, my parents are probably right when they rebuke me, “shut you up. We don’t want to lose you”, when I try to be opinionated over the dispute.
As a matter of fact, our opinions mayn’t coincide at times, but we have tried our best to make the readers visualize the problem. This can be also taken as a book giving you comparative perceptions of a common muslim and a hindu about the problem.


1. Fundamentally, the valley has the right of self-determination:: they deserve to decide their fate themselves
2. A unanimous view and coordinated effort of all Kashmiris can rectify the problem
