Gingivitis affects the gums, the tissue that surrounds the teeth and causes red, swollen and tender gums that bleed easily.

Periodontitis is a severe gum disease that spreads below the gums to damage the tissues and bone that support the teeth. Periodontitis causes the gums to shrink back from the teeth, leaving pockets between the teeth and gums where germs (bacteria) can grow and damage the bone that supports the teeth. Teeth look longer, may become loose and fall out.
