LaVonne Houlton’s love affair with Morgan horses began in 1939 when she was fourteen years old. She became a great admirer of what we now call the Western Working Morgan, and her own breeding program was based on the Sellman/Hill/Hearst working stock of California. LaVonne’s writing career blossomed over the years, and she was widely acclaimed for her well-researched historical articles. LaVonne’s cowboy poetry and prose can be found on www.cowboypoetry.com. In 2002, “Ace” was a runner-up in the Lariat Laureate competition, and in 2003 her poem “Ern Pedler” won the same distinction. In 2004, she received the prestigious Lariat Laureate award for her poem “Town and Country.” As historian and author Gail Perlee states, “LaVonne was the first and most prolific historian of the Western Working Morgan in California and her work honors the contribution of the Morgan horse to the history and development of the American West. It is an important source for those who wish to understand the history of the breed and learn more about the horses behind today’s Morgans.” “The LaVonne Houlton Compendium” is a compilation of LaVonne Houlton’s life work, researched, edited and published by Janet Gingold, Tucson, Arizona. Ms. Gingold has had a life-long passion for horses, including the Morgan horse, America’s oldest existing light horse breed. Ms. Gingold has authored several articles including “The Scorpion’s Tail,” “The Morgans of Sabino,” “Down Memory Lane: A Visit to the Brunk Museum, Cotton Hill and Highview” and others; this is her first book.
